Founded in 1974 in Manhattan s Chinatown to advocate for equal rights, AAFE has transformed in the past four decades to become one of the city s leading housing, social service and community development organizations.AAFE advances racial, social and economic justice for Asian Americans and other systematically disadvantaged communities, guided by our experiences as Asian Americans and our commitment to civil rights.AAFE is nationally recognized as an innovative affordable housing developer and property manager; we have created and preserved more than 1,000 affordable rental units in Manhattan and Queens and provided over $400 million in mortgage financing for first-time homebuyers. Through our affiliate, Renaissance Economic Development Corporation, AAFE supports immigrant entrepreneurs, offering low-interest loans and training programs. From neighborhood offices in Chinatown and the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Flushing and Jackson Heights (Queens) we provide an array of multilingual counseling and educational programs in support of low-income tenants, seniors and immigrant youth. AAFE strives for a more equitable city, throughresearch, advocacy and grassroots community organizing.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

AAFE Community Services is seeking a Staff Generalist to provide Chinese language support, enhanced social services, engagement and community building in East Harlem.

AAFE s presence in East Harlem is fairly new, our long-term goal is to bring resources and culturally competent programming to community members, to foster stronger resident cohesion and to build an authentic and engaged residential community. Currently, our East Harlem program provides language outreach and education support to Asian Seniors residing in VAYA and Ascendant operated NYCHA buildings, a monthly Asian produce pantry, seasonal Community Supported Agriculture program and community building events.

  • Provide outreach and engagement to facilitate community needs assessment surveys from Chinese language households.
  • Collaborate with VAYA and Ascendant property management to communicate and help facilitate unit inspections for Asian older adult households.
  • Assist Asian older adult residents to communicate directly and proactively with the landlord and act as a conduit between tenant and landlord when necessary to resolve issues.
  • Facilitate forums to disseminate information relating to the building and to facilitate dialog between Asian older tenants and property management.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with VAYA, Ascendant and Little Sisters of the Assumption to provide updates, feedback, progress reporting and strategic planning.
  • Provide light touch case management to Asian older adults, including concrete support with letter reading, entitlements and benefits applications and renewal.
  • Operate our monthly pantry, including distribution, set up, clean up and volunteer management.
  • Operate our seasonal Community Supported Agriculture program, including distribution, set up, clean up and volunteer management.
  • Participate and assist in resource, cultural and community building events and cultivate resident engagement and collaboration as community stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other AAFE community services programs, including immigration, community health care, entitlement and benefits referrals.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and training.
  • Maintain thorough, timely and accurate documentations, files, and correspondence.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of the position.
  • Follows policies and procedures, completes administrative tasks accurately and on time and supports organizational goals and values.
  • Participate in department staff meetings and trainings.
  • Share light chores to maintain cleanliness and neatness in the office.
  • Support office operations, as needed.
  • Perform other related work and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor s degree in social work or related field, required.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in a community-based organization with specific targeted practice in community and/or program development and with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Culturally competent with a strong diversity, equity and inclusion lens.
  • Excellent computer skills, including a high degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to present information to a diverse client base- specifically racially, ethnically and socially diverse.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Bilingual in Chinese
  • Strategic and Analytical Thinking
  • Experienced in tracking outcomes and program impact.
  • Innovative and creative thinking
  • Must be resourceful and a strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit and unlimited supply of energy.

COMPENSATION:
