Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Physics or Engineering. Three (3) years of full-time research experience in experimental high-energy or nuclear physics.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience designing/building and operating detectors used in nuclear and particle physics experiments. Experience in data analysis.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Scientific Support Specialist will support the activities of the nuclear experimental faculty in the department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University. As part of the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science they will participate in the Center's activities. The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and ePIC detector construction will be the principal focus of the activities of the group in the coming years - and hence also of the successful incumbent for this position. Current and future members of the Nuclear Physics (NP) group may consider other experiments for future involvement. In addition, software development, data analysis and simulation studies are ongoing for many of the above and past experiments. They will be expected to help in technical tasks of any of these experiments with varying degree of involvement - while keeping EIC the principal focus. The successful incumbent will have the opportunity to initiate detector R&D and independent research of their own interest. The successful incumbent will have the flexibility and freedom to apply for grants independently or in collaboration with our faculty. Teaching may be an option in consultation with the NP experimental group.

The successful incumbent will have:

* Demonstrated ability in multitasking (time management), organizing groups and other activities with a research group.

* Ability and inclination to work in large groups and help postdocs and students.

* Excellent verbal and communication skills to communicate for the group in large collaborations and other scientific/public forums.

Duties:

* Electron Ion Collider Detector related activities.

* Research and Development of the sPHENIX experiment at BNL.

* Operation of the sPHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

* Construction of the MOLLER detector and Research and Development for the SoLID experiment at Jefferson Laboratory.

* Operation MUSE and planning of PIONEER experiments at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) Switzerland.

* Construction and operation of Dark Light at Ariel/TRIUMF, Canada.

* Ice Cube experiment at the south pole.

* Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
