Job Description:

Minimum Qualifications Research Scientist 4 (Grade 27):A bachelors degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree, AND at least five years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master's degree in one of the above fields, AND at least four years of post-degree professional research experience; OR a doctorate in one of the above fields, AND at least two years of post-degree professional research experience.

Preferred Qualifications: The candidate will have experience in environmental, occupational, reproductive, social epidemiology, or behavioral epidemiology; with specific expertise in coordinating and managing research; and surveillance projects related to birth defects epidemiology. Experience with preparing grant proposals, reports, and publications are preferred. They will also have experience interacting with and communicating results to diverse audiences, including the scientific community. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, statistical software, and data management is preferred. The incumbent will also have excellent organizational, interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to effectively work in a team setting and interact with individuals at all levels. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Duties Description The Research Scientist (RS) 4 will serve as the Assistant Bureau Director within the Office of the Director in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will perform a broad range of essential epidemiological and research activities; including problem definition, background research, study design, execution of protocols, analysis, and interpretation; preparation and dissemination of methods; and findings. They will assist in coordinating daily operations and monitoring progress; providing administrative, technical, operational, programmatic, scientific, and management support; and guiding and directing. They will serve as co-investigator, epidemiologist, and program manager on federal grants. As the Assistant Bureau Director, the RS will also prepare grant proposals, progress reports, and publications; collaborate with state and federal partners, stakeholders, public officials, scientific community, and the general public; assist with response activities on public health crises, outbreaks, and emerging issues; serve as a subject matter expert as needed; and supervise and mentor junior research staff.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, full-time, appointment. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%). Candidates, please clearly indicate how you possess a full scope of professional research experience.
