Job Description:
Margin Lending Underwriters (UW) within 1LOD at Citi are responsible for the underwriting, approval, extension of credit and on-going portfolio monitoring within the Margin Lending product of Citi Private Bank (CPB). Citi Global Wealth (CGW) is a single, integrated platform serving clients across the wealth continuum from the affluent segment to ultra-high net worth clients. Underwriters typically have experience in underwriting plain-vanilla as well as structured credit solutions to Private Bank clients with a focus on margin lending.This candidate will one of two UW Heads reporting to the North America (NAM) Regional Head of CCR Underwriting. This candidate will lead the Margin Lending team servicing clients in North America (NAM). The candidate will interact regularly with our Margin Lending Originators, Private Bankers and other internal stakeholders (for Margin Lending) and quite frequently with the Global Capital Markets team.Job Summary:
  • The NAM Margin Lending UW Head (Group Manager) is a senior member of the underwriting community at CPB and an experienced lending product specialist within the Investment Finance business.
  • The role includes leading underwriting and supporting credit structuring of Margin Lending products as well as providing credit approval and limits.
  • Managing an UW team of 5+ Credit Officers, handling new credit relationships and the existing portfolio of Private Bank credit relationships.
Major Job Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for managing and organizing a team of Margin Lending Underwriters to achieve timely delivery of credit approvals, annual reviews, loan modifications, among other portfolio-related tasks.
  • Work in partnership with CPB Banker teams, Banking and Lending Originators teams to initiate and underwrite the credit approval of new margin loans, interim credit applications.
  • Provides oversight, mentoring, coaching and support to UWs, driving the team to deliver high quality credit analysis, accurate credit documentation and to perform all required portfolio monitoring activities.
  • Supports and promotes a culture of continuous improvement to ensure that robust business processes are in place and our processes are audit ready.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations, as well as Citi's policies and the Product Program.
  • Assist in the preparation of preapproval memos (EDAC or Greenlight memos), when required.
  • In partnership with the Transactors, assist with the structuring and execution of more complex or tailored transactions, meeting Risk Acceptance Criteria
  • Conducting due diligence, including; risk ratings, borrower, financial and collateral analysis, identifying non-Target Market counterparties and ensuring minimum mandatory disclosures are met for all credit applications.
  • Work closely with all other stakeholders on counterparty credit policies, enhancements to UW standards and procedures, successful delivery of Regulatory Business Critical Milestones (RBCMs), Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) and any other regulatory items deemed to be top priorities.
  • Develop relationships and manage the NAM Private Banker team's expectations, setting workflow schedules and priorities to ensure timely completion of credit transactions within standard turnaround timeframes and to support Greenlight Memo's and approvals.
  • If necessary, coach and advise Private Banker teams on basic Wholesale Credit Risk (WCR) policies, standards, procedures, and product structures.
  • Ensuring the framework of WCR Credit Risk Policies, Standard, Procedures and Operating Manuals are followed with respect to Underwriting.
  • Providing CCR UW approval (may provide 1LOD covering initial) for each extension of credit, confirming that each credit approval meets all minimum requirements, including risk rating attestation, and that it's within our established credit risk appetite. This includes approvals for interim and new credit approvals, annual reviews, Classified Credit Memos (CCMs) and any other items which require 2LOD Risk credit approval.
  • Preparing and monitoring of borrower compliance with Automatic Termination Events, Events of Default and other approval conditions.
  • Participate in document negotiations, and ensuring derivative, margin loan and other associated legal documentation is executed in line with credit approval.
  • Notifying Special Assets group of potential changes in classification, proposing classification changes and timely completion of CCMs.
  • Working with Margin Lending Origination and GCM Markets Credit Solutions Team in coordinating margin call deferrals and approvals
  • Working and navigating across all of Citi's risk and reporting infrastructure to ensure exposures and risks are accurately reported and monitored appropriately.
  • Working closely with Quality Assurance and Business Risk teams to ensure all controls related to the credit approval process are adhered to.
Knowledge/Skills Required:
  • Minimum of 10+ years of Private Banking or Consumer banking experience preferably for 1LOD with specific expertise on credit UW for a nationally known bank, broker-dealer or financial institution.
  • Subject matter expert in managing counterparty credit risk and obligor analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience underwriting marketable securities backed lending transactions.
  • Experience and working knowledge of standard securities backed loan documentation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Good working knowledge of systems/MIS such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate with Private Bankers, internal peers, and occasionally external clients, as well as coordinate with outside counsel when necessary.
