Job Description: Professional tutors provide remote and in-person tutoring services to individuals and groups. Professional tutors work primarily at the Poughkeepsie campus, but may also work at DCC@Fishkill. For this position, we are seeking tutors who have experience in Human Services, Psychology, Direct Support, and related fields.This position will report to the Tutoring Coordinator for the Learning Commons and the Direct Support Professional Microcredential Program Chair. The Learning Commons provides academic support to students that promotes deep engagement with learning materials and fosters an appreciation for curiosity, exploration, and growth. The Learning Commons includes a variety of academic support services (Ritz Library, Math & Science Center, Writing Center, Office of Accommodative Services, Testing Services, Subject tutoring, and CSTEP). The primary responsibilities of Professional Tutors are to clarify and reinforce course content, assignments, and material for specific subject areas. The Professional Tutor also provides guidance with helping students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to student success. These include, but are not limited to, goal setting, learning strategies, time management, organization, and self-direction. Professional tutors also provide guidance to students regarding all academic supports available to provide any needed intervention. Professional Tutors advocate for student educational achievement to the highest attainable standard, support student goals, and uphold the educational mission of the college. The Professional Tutor will also assist students in the DSP Microcredential cohort prepare for and navigate e-badge submission with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals.Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Tutoring Coordinator and the Direct Support Professional Microcredential Program Coordinator, the professional tutor will:
  • Provide in-person and remote tutoring to DCC students, either individually or in small groups.
  • Participate in, and assist with facilitating, Learning Commons workshops and programming activities.
  • Become knowledgeable about, and adhere to, institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Seek professional development opportunities related to tutoring practices, student success, student engagement, best practices for academic support, etc.
  • Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Manage technology needed to support tutoring programs, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, TutorTrac, and Bookings.
  • Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students.
  • Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Assist students in preparing for, and navigating, e-badge submission with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree, in a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students as a Professional Tutor.
  • Previous experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction.
  • Ability to teach learning strategies to students.
  • Ability to lead small group tutoring sessions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context as well as flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Flexible schedule; ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree, preferably in higher education or a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students.
  • Experience working with students in a community college environment, preferably in the delivery of academic support services.
  • At least two years of experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction.
  • Experience working with ESL students.
  • Experience working with students to develop their reading comprehension skills.
Additional Information: Academic support positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Dutchess Community College and Dutchess United Educators (DUE).Salary Range: $26.79- $31.45 per hourThis position will work up to 25 hours per week. This is a temporary grant funded position through the Fall of 2025, with the possibility of extending the position beyond that date, pending available funding.Employment will require a criminal background screening.
