DutiesThis is a one-year traineeship used to appoint individuals to an entry-level Probation Officer I, Probation Officer I (Other Language) or Probation Officer I (Community Liaison) position in a probation department responsible for the care of adults and juveniles subject to probation supervision or intake services which require them to meet certain standards of conduct. A Probation Officer Trainee is responsible for participating in a continuous in-service training program regarding the investigative, supervision, counseling and coaching duties and responsibilities of a Probation Officer I and, under close and on-going supervision, performs such duties and exercises such responsibilities in a limited nature. When a Probation Officer Trainee participates in a traineeship for a Probation Officer I (Other Language) or a Probation Officer I (Community Liaison) position, he/she is required to satisfy the additional requirements for these positions and be capable to learn the specialized work they perform. Probation Officer Trainee work is performed under the direct supervision of a probation professional. Upon successful completion of the one-year traineeship the incumbent is appointed to the position of Probation Officer I or specified parenthetical without further examination. A Probation Officer Trainee is a Peace Officer pursuant to Criminal Procedure Law Section 2.10 and may be authorized to carry a firearm in the performance of his/her duties. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required.This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirements for Probation Officer I. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, a Probation Officer Trainee shall attain permanent status as Probation Officer I.NOTE: Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.Minimum QualificationsREVISED 4/19/24 Must be met on or before the date of the written exam:Training and ExperienceGraduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees, with a Bachelor's degree or higher with at least thirty (30) credit hours in the social or behavioral sciences. The class specifications including the minimum qualifications for positions in Probation Departments are established by rule and regulations of the Division of Criminal Justice Services. These class specifications are found in Title 9 NYCRR Part 347, Appendix H-10, Standard Specifications for Professional Probation Positions. 4. In such cases, the disabled veteran shall be entitled to apply for and use 10 credits on New York State and local open competitive and promotion examinations, minus the number of non-disabled credits he or she has previously used. The additional credits can only be used once. SECTIONS 85-A & 85-B: In conformance with sections 85-a and 85-b of the Civil Service Law, (85-a)children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty and (85-b) siblings of firefighters and police officers having died in the performance of duty as a natural and proximate result of either the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001 or in the subsequent rescue effort, shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent/sibling has served.
