The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools including 4 alternative education programs, serving 19,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 83.6% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 22% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.JOB DESCRIPTION:The T&L Instructional Coach for Secondary ELA will provide instructional support and coaching to SCSD building and other district-level instructional coaches and secondary ELA teachers as they work to effectively implement district curriculum resources and evidence-based high-leverage instructional practices in support of the priorities identified in the SCSD Strategic Plan/Bridge Plan. The primary role of the T&L Instructional Coach for Secondary ELA is to increase the capacity of teachers to deliver high quality Tier 1 instruction that meets the needs of all students and of instructional coaches and building leaders to monitor and support instruction in ELA classrooms in the Middle and High Schools.The T&L Instructional Coach for Secondary ELA will also serve as an advisor to SCSD building and other district-level instructional coaches and secondary ELA teachers by providing support in the implementation and support of district instructional priorities and practices. Support includes collaboration and coaching around instructional planning and delivery, analysis of data to drive instruction, and the integration of evidence-based literacy instructional practices across academic disciplines. They will work to make evident the connections between priorities and initiatives brought forward across district divisions and departments.The responsibilities of the T&L Instructional Coach for Secondary ELA extend beyond the school day. To maximize the time during the school day spent supporting SCSD building and other district-level instructional coaches and secondary ELA teachers directly, many planning and organizational tasks will need to be completed outside of regular school hours. The T&L Instructional Coach for Secondary ELA will also be expected to attend and deliver professional development that occurs after the school day and throughout the summer.REPORTS TO: Director of English Language ArtsDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Instructional Support: Supporting SCSD building and other district-level instructional coaches and secondary ELA teachers with designing and implementing rigorous and culturally responsive and sustaining instruction that meet the learning needs of all students; collaborates across divisions and departments to align messaging
    • Supports building and other district-level instructional coaches through professional development sessions, guidance documents, and curricular resources aligned to district priorities
    • Provides instructional coaching which includes impact coaching cycles with individual teachers focused on improving student outcomes through effective instruction and assessment
    • Facilitates reflection and problem solving with teachers
    • Creates an environment that establishes and promotes continuous improvement for student outcomes
    • Collaborates with teachers and provides specific strategies for improved instructional delivery with evidence-based instructional strategies and interventions to improve achievement for all students
    • Assists teachers with implementation of Response-to-Intervention framework
    • Co-teaches and/or models lessons as needed to support teacher development
    • Builds teacher capacity in ensuring all students have equitable access to rigorous learning opportunities that account for individual student needs
  • Data Analysis and Utilization Support: Supporting teachers in understanding, analyzing and utilizing data to support equitable student access to learning; collaborating with Office of Shared Accountability to provide accurate, relevant, and useable data and to support the effective utilization of data to make instructional decisions and action plans
    • Establishes a culture that uses student data regularly to improve instructional practices
    • Provides support to building and other district-level instructional coaches and school and district leaders on how to effectively utilize formative and summative assessment data to drive instructional planning across the tiers of a multi-tiered system of instructional support
    • Builds teacher capacity in effectively using formative data to inform instruction
    • Cultivates a standards-based, data and results-oriented culture
    • Collaborates and/or facilitates the analysis of interim and formative assessment data that informs instructional planning
  • Content and Curriculum Support: Supporting building and other district-level coaches and secondary ELA teachers in deepening their content knowledge while aligning standards, curriculum, and assessment
    • Makes recommendations on best practices for supporting curricular alignment across all grade levels and individual schools (alignment to district curriculum and resources as well as to state and national standards)
    • Supports teachers in reviewing curriculum to create milestones or benchmarks so that teachers have a clear understanding of where students should be throughout the school year
    • Supports teachers in the internalization of unit and daily lesson plans
    • Reviews and provides feedback on teacher-developed lesson plans, unit plans and assessments
  • Professional Development: Providing ongoing professional development based on teacher, building, and district needs
    • Attends district professional development sessions that happen both within and outside of regular school hours
    • Develops and delivers and/or turnkeys professional development to building and other district-level coaches, secondary ELA teachers, and school and district leaders
    • Builds the capacity of building and other district-level coaches, secondary ELA teachers, and school and district leaders to improve student outcomes
    • Leads teacher study groups and/or professional learning teams to increase content and pedagogical knowledge
  • Other work:
    • Maintains records of coach, teacher, and leader support and submits to supervisor at requested intervals to document quantity, duration and type of support
    • Completes any additional duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer or Director of English Language Arts
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Strong record of helping students from all demographic subgroups achieve academic success
  • Reputation as an advocate for equity in instructional quality for students across subgroups, particularly where opportunity gaps have existed historically
  • Significant experience with curriculum development and unit and lesson planning
  • Experience implementing effective instructional practices, designing engaging lessons, and using data and formative assessment in the classroom
  • Understanding of and ability to support implementation of a multi-tiered system of student and staff support
  • Knowledge of and experience of the backwards design planning process
  • Extensive knowledge of high-leverage instructional practices
  • Experience in professional development and leadership roles working with adults
  • Ability to plan, model, coach and provide feedback to individual teachers and teams of teachers to improve teaching and learning
  • Integrity and commitment to the SCSD mission and willingness to serve the SCSD community
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum five (5) years of teaching experience required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as a teacher leader
  • Appropriate New York State Teacher Certification in the area(s) of Elementary education and/or Secondary certification areas
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible, willing and able to play different instructional roles at the school; and be willing to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students of the SCSD
  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Education (preferred)
  • Training and/or experience with International Baccalaureate programs and other school frameworks such as Expeditionary Learning, AVID, Project-Based Learning, and STEM or STEAM (preferred)
  • Successful external candidates will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $101.75 to the candidate.
