Job Description:
Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. Duties & Responsibilities Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in consultation with bio-medical and other appropriate personnel, provide direct care to patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment in outpatient end stage renal disease (ESRD) facilities. Act in compliance with corporate, facility and all relevant regulatory policies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace which enhances and furthers the Mission, Vision and Value Statement of the Network.
  • Addresses patients, visitors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Responsible for the safe technical operation of Hemodialysis delivery systems.
  • Assists with the planning and coordination of installation of new or revised methods, equipment and operating procedures.
  • Assists in formulation of procedures for care and use of Hemodialysis equipment.
  • Maintains adequate supplies for dialysis and assists with periodic inventory. Exercises central control over inventory, requisitioning, delivery and distribution of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in resolution of operating problems and provides guidance on such.
  • Assists with the requisition of supplies and/or service needed.
  • Repairs and maintains dialysis equipment.
  • Establishes guidelines for inspection, maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Ensures the maintenance of logs and maintenance records.
  • Ensures that the integrity of the RO System is maintained.
  • Reviews results of all cultures and elements and submits findings to the Service Medical Director.
  • Interfaces with sales persons of various companies regarding efficiency and cost of equipment and supplies.
  • Makes recommendations regarding prospective applicants for Biomedical Technician positions.
  • Keeps abreast of current technical literature and puts into use new procedures approved by the appropriate authorities.
  • Participates in planning and organizing on-the-job training and special training programs for medical, nursing and technical staff assigned to the service; teaches selected subjects.
  • Has good verbal and written communication skills; documents and reports clearly and concisely.
  • Operates as an integral member of the health care team.
  • Maintains confidentiality of hospital records and uses discretion when discussing hospital matters.
  • Seeks guidance, as necessary, for performance of duties.
  • Advises immediate supervisor of situations that require follow-up.
  • Maintains a professional working relationship with other health care personnel.
  • Maintains timely and accurate departmental records as outlined in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
  • Assist as requested and perform tasks in a timely manner while maintaining quality performance standards.
  • Demonstrate flexibility according to workload, unit activity, crisis and/or emergency situation.
  • Meets all compliance standards/requirements such as Annual Physical Evaluation, MultiStar Training and Customer Service Training.
  • Enhances personal and clinical development through the attendance of internal in-service training, as well as external educational offerings.
  • Demonstrates a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or a G.E.D; and
  • Successful completion of a Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician training course as evident by a valid certificate of completion or equivalent documentation; and
  • Certification issued by a national commercially available or state recognized Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician program must be obtained within 18 months of being hired into this title; and
  • Completion of an approved facility-based training program in the performance of basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Special Notes:
  • Nationally available certification programs endorsed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Code of Federal Register - 494.140(e), include those of the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC), the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT), and the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO).
  • An in-house certification and/or training program may be administered / conducted to assess and develop individuals assigned to this title; however, such internal efforts do not replace the CMS requirement that hemodialysis patient care technicians be nationally or state certified as outlined in 3 above.
  • This is a physically demanding position requiring employees to lift, carry, push and pull dialysis machines, related equipment and/or supplies which vary in weight and size, as well as stand and walk for extended periods of time. Employees must be able to carry out other physical demands that are essential to the job.
