Job Overview The Head of Lower School Math position is ideal for the dynamic, knowledgeable, and collaborative math educator who will lead Mathematics in the Lower School while enjoying the exuberance and curiosity of children and valuing close partnerships with grade-level teachers. This math leader, reporting to the Head of Lower School, will collaborate within the Lower School and across the K-12 school for a shared vision and cohesive progression of math education, lead the professional growth and support of math teachers in the Lower School, and communicate the vision and philosophy of the Lower School Math Program to parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders.Chapin's Department Heads play a key role as stewards of the School's Academic Program, providing academic leadership and initiative informed by knowledge appropriate to their disciplines and recent developments in their fields. Working in collaboration with one another within their divisions as well as across the K-12 school, Department Heads work closely with faculty, Division Heads, and the Director of Academic Program to develop curriculum and support enhancements in teaching and learning practices, seeking always to improve the student experience, in alignment with Chapin's mission. Chapin's Department Heads exemplify the qualities that they seek to develop in the faculty, ensuring that content and pedagogy reflect most recent research and best practices. The Department Head reports to the Division Head and works closely with the Director of Academic Program to ensure vertical alignment of Chapin's K-12 curriculum.Chapin's next Head of Lower School Math will be - A math educator who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development, and who
  • Leads the ongoing review, revision and authorship of Chapin's inquiry-based in-house math program in collaboration with the Director of Academic Program, Director of Instructional Practices, homeroom teachers, Middle and Upper School Math Heads, and Middle and Lower School Division Heads
  • Updates existing materials and creates additional instructional materials, including lesson plans, assessments, and worksheets
  • Brings curriculum to life through various learning experiences, including hands-on learning, and embodies the joy of learning and exploration by sharing their passion and enthusiasm for math with students.
  • Collaborates with homeroom teachers on curriculum planning, setting expectations, assessing student's achievement levels, and differentiating

  • Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests
  • Collaborates with homeroom teachers to analyze data and subsequently design differentiation interventions to support all students' mathematical growth
  • Conducts additional assessments to determine student progress, leveraging data to determine strategic instructional techniques tailored to meet individual students' needs

  • Models whole-group math lessons in grades K-3 and facilitates targeted small-group instruction
  • Supports homeroom teachers with instructional implementation and professional development to increase instructional effectiveness in teaching math
  • Leads and participates in grade-level math cluster meetings and provides training and support to grade-level math facilitators
  • Presents regularly to the current and prospective parents about Chapin's math program
  • Develops and maintains the Lower School Math Website as a resource for parents and students
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years successful classroom teaching experience with children of this age
  • Strong background in mathematical knowledge, mathematical research, and various curricula, including - TERC investigations, Cognitively Guided Instruction, Big Ideas, Bridges in Mathematics, and Singapore Math
  • Expertise in using and helping others use effective instructional and assessment practices that are informed by knowledge of mathematical learning trajectories
  • Experience with inquiry-based learning and mathematical discourse
  • A passion for learning and the ability to motivate and inspire students
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing clear and coherent lesson plans.
  • Personal traits appropriate for nurturing the growth of children - must be energetic, creative, flexible, patient, and have an inexhaustible sense of humor
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency work
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in mathematics education, elementary education or other related fields.
  • Expertise in planning and implementing math workshop model in the classroom
  • Previous success in supporting teachers through coaching and professional development, including the MQI rubric
