Graphic Design Intern, Newcomer Youth Summer Academy Position : Graphic Design Intern, Newcomer Youth Summer Academy Reports to : Senior Manager, Youth Programs Hours : Part-time; varied 4-15 hours/week

Position Term : 6/15/2024- 8/15/2024

Background: Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community- based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools. Scope of Work: The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 - 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays. The Graphic Designer will design and put together NYSA Yearbook, working in collaboration with the Yearbook Coordinator and volunteer NYSA Photographer(s). The Graphic Designer will work part-time as needed on-site at the Summer Academy, and participate in project meetings at the IRC in NY office. The Graphic Designer will work collaboratively with the Yearbook Coordinator and Photographers, assist with yearbook responsibilities, and meet the required yearbook deadlines. Learning objectives: The Graphic Design intern will: 1. Strengthen expertise in taking a graphic design project from concept to deliverable 2. Learn about the creative needs of nonprofit humanitarian and social service agencies and how to meet those needs 3. Practice developing, refining and executing a concept that exemplifies a defined theme and values Essential Job Function: * Attend NYSA training * Develop concept(s) for the NYSA yearbook design and layout * Produce the design & layout within the timeframe laid out * Insert photos into layout and produce final for printing * Communicate and coordinate regularly with team to ensure that yearbook related activities take place according to schedule, and any scheduling or other conflicts/issues are worked out in a timely manner * Receive and integrate feedback * Work with team to ensure accuracy of all elements of the yearbook (pictures are properly labeled and placed) * Provide all files to IRC

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements: * Graphic Designer with at least one year experience * Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills * Flexible, and able to solve problems * Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience required * Strong experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop * Experience working with diverse populations desirable * Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team * Consent to the yearbook as being the sole property of the IRC, not to be used by the graphic designer without IRC permission.
