  • ummer Opportunities Academics & enRichment (SOAR) Program: July 1st - August 2nd (No SOAR on July 4th)
Compensation: $15.00/hrDescription:The summer middle school Food Science program is an introduction to basic food science principles with hands-on learning opportunities focusing on various forms of food preservation, nutrition, food chemistry, and the human experience. The intern will:
  • Support lesson and recipe development with guidance from Food Science Coordinator
  • Assist with preparing for teaching sessions (setting up classroom space, organizing materials, etc.)
  • Support middle school learning throughout various cooking projects
  • Assist with all cleanup (dishwashing, drying, room organization, etc.)
The middle school portion of the internship will take place on the following dates* from 11:00am-4:00pm at Edmunds Middle School (275 Main St, Burlington, VT 05401): Session 1: Wednesday, June 26Session 2: Monday, July 1 Session 3: Tuesday, July 2The summer elementary SOAR food science program supports curricular reading and math skills through hands-on learning and enrichment activities that take place outdoors in the school garden and through classroom cooking projects, specifically designed to reduce summer learning loss.The intern will:
    • Support lesson and recipe development with guidance from Food Science Coordinator
    • Co-teach outdoor garden-based lessons for K-5 students
  • Assist in the maintenance and harvest of Burlington's school gardens. Weekly garden chores include: weeding, watering, pest management, and harvesting.
  • Assist with preparing for teaching sessions (setting up classroom or garden space, organizing materials, etc.)
  • Support elementary school learning throughout various cooking projects
  • Assist with all cleanup (tidying garden tools, dishwashing, drying, room organization, etc.)
The SOAR portion of the internship will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays* from 8:00am-4:00pm at Flynn Elementary School (1645 North Ave, Burlington, VT 05408):Tuesdays: 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30Wednesdays: 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31Thursdays: 7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1*Please Note: Teaching days may be subject to change, and intern will be given advanced notice of any schedule changes.Requirements:
  • Access to transportation
  • Able to lift 20 pounds
  • Punctuality and strong communication skills are required.
  • This internship requires getting dirty, and intern will be expected to work rain or shine.
  • Has an understanding of safe food handling practices
  • Experience with organic growing practices
  • Interest in working with elementary and middle school youth
  • Employees must be highly motivated, and show professionalism
  • Background check and fingerprinting will be required per District policy
