Come discover all that Ithaca, New York and Cayuga Health has to offer!Position Overview: As a Financial Counselor at Cayuga Medical Center, you are responsible for reviewing scheduled appointments, planned surgeries and planned admissions to ensure all aspects of insurance approval have been met. The position is also responsible for informing the patient/guarantor of all financial liabilities and documenting pertinent information into appropriate systems. The position requires integral communication with patients, insurance companies, department administrators, physicians, and other departmental staff to ensure the ideal patient experience.Minimum Qualifications:
  • Validate insurance coverage and benefits for inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Efficiently and accurately gathers and inputs patient/guarantor demographic and financial information.
  • Successfully adhere to financial policies and processes, act with integrity, good judgment, take initiative and pro-actively solve problems
  • Exhibits competency in the use of all registration systems, electronic verification tools and Web based resources.
  • Work with various departments to obtain payment source for uninsured patients, to include but not limited to Case Management (CM), Behavioral Health Unit (BHU), Surgical Services (SS).
  • Assist with alternative payment source for uninsured patients, to include but not limited to: Identify payment source
    • Collect down payment and establish plan payment
    • Work with Surgical Services to reschedule any uninsured patients until payment source, or payment plan, is established
    • Medicaid
    • CMC Financial Assistance Program
  • Provide estimates to patients and collect estimated balances for new and established patients, including proper completion of Good Faith Estimate form.
  • Explains necessary forms and obtains signatures from patient/guarantor.
  • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of third party reimbursement requirements and regulations.
  • Accurately capture information / document in the registration system the correct payor and health plan, procedure and diagnosis codes and identification numbers.
  • Provide customer service / communicate with ordering providers, patients and insurance company representatives to obtain and share regular status updates.
  • Demonstrates a positive and professional approach and communicates effectively with customers and team members at all times.
  • Consistently meets quality standards set by Revenue Cycle.
  • Meets departmental goals regarding collections, productivity and customer service.
  • Maintains flexibility in work schedule availability that allows department to change/modify work schedule to meet departmental needs.
  • Meets federal, state and hospital requirements related to compliance issues.
  • Attends and participates in department staff meetings and attends other meetings as assigned
  • Other job-specific duties as assigned
Education Requirements:
  • Associate's degree (and two (2) year of relevant experience)
  • In lieu of an Associate's degree, a HS diploma (or equivalent) with four (4) years of relevant experience
Experience:
  • Two (2) years' experience of healthcare experience working for a health plan, physician practice, surgery center or hospital in a business capacity required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite including Word and Excel.
  • A minimum of one (1) year minimum experience in data processing, hospital registration, insurance verification, insurance pre-certification / authorization with a healthcare provider or insurance company required
