**Overview**

Developmental Disabilities Institute, DDI, is one of the largest providers of care to children and adults with Autism, developmental disabilities and other special needs. DDI has been a part of Long Island for over 50 years serving over 1,500 children and adults with Autism, other developmental disabilities and special needs. DDI provides innovative and expansive services to our population through various educational settings, residential services, day habilitation programs and vocational services.

The Family Behavior Support Program provides short-term (2-6 months, not to exceed 9 months with an addendum request) behavioral consultation to families who have children or adults with developmental disabilities who reside at home and who exhibit serious challenging behaviors. These may be individuals whose residential status at home may be at risk, or whose challenging behaviors are causing family stress, compromising family quality of life, or inhibiting successful community inclusion. The Applied Behavior Specialist will utilize methods based on Positive Behavior Support to assist families with implementing strategies designed to both reduce challenging behaviors, and positively impact the familys quality of life. Behavior Specialists may also provide other services, such as person-centered planning and staff training at alternate environments (e.g., day settings). Consultation is provided to the families via telehealth, in their homes and/or community, as determined to be most clinically appropriate, and/or preferred by the families. In addition, out of home consultations between family members and Behavior Specialists are also available.

**Responsibilities**

* Review referral packet and facilitate initial consultation with family.

* Conduct Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) for the purpose of creating a Behavior Support Plan (BSP). This will include observation, assessment tools and interview with family as necessary.

* Provide family with written Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Support Plan (BSP) as necessary.

* Provide training for the family and related service professionals in the home, regarding use of behavioral supports, according to program guidelines/requirements as specified by OPWDD.

* Augment BSP with positive behavior support strategies such as Social Stories, Power Cards, Daily/Weekly Activity Schedules and Positive Reinforcement systems as appropriate / necessary.

* Monitor the implementation of the BSP and/or positive behavior support strategies and update or revise as necessary.

* Implement and monitor ongoing data collection to assess progress of BSP.

* Observe family / caretaker and other service providers working with individual to ensure BSP is being followed

* Provide feedback and modeling regarding implementation of behavior support strategies.

* Communicate with the individual, family, and/or other professionals / service providers through written reports, telehealth, telephone contacts, electronic contacts or face-to-face encounters.

* Provide transition planning.

* Maintain documentation in accordance with program guidelines/requirements as specified by supervisor and OPWDD.

* Consult with Clinical Supervisor as necessary.

* Demonstrate familiarity with state and federal regulations in the psychology, communication, and life safety areas of support.

* Demonstrate knowledge of DDIs policies on the treatment of problem behavior

**Qualifications**

* Masters degree in a clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology or applied psychology. *OR*

* National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Masters degree in behavior analysis or clinical or community psychology. *OR*

* New York State license in Mental Health Counseling.

*AND*

* Minimum of five (5) years experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities, including the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavior support plans and/or supervision and training to others in the implementation of behavior support plans.

* National board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) **and**

* Masters degree in behavior analysis, or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology which is approved by OPWDD

*OR*

* Masters degree in clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology or applied psychology or a related human services field **or**

* New York State license in Mental Health Counseling **and**

* Have or obtain OPWDD-approved specialized training or experience in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development **and**

* Have provided behavioral services for an agency in the OPWDD system continuously since December 31, 2012

OR

* Masters degree in clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology or applied psychology or a related human services field **and**

* Function in the Psychologist I or II Civil Service titles of NYS
