What s this role about?

The successful candidate will join the growing US team by leading the design, optimization and implementation of small, medium and large-scale projects that will primarily focus on battery installations, smart switchgear and transformer upgrades in an effort to allow customers to enter their large energy using assets into the different grid schemes. For most engineers, the real reward is seeing your design energised and providing support to the grid, helping us all transition to a sustainable future.

Project support for battery energy storage system (BESS) throughout the entire project lifecycle:

  • Provide technical support to the sales team.
  • Technical assessment of site for available capacity and compliance.
  • Provide a power systems model of the site and proposed BESS.
  • Engineering design functions in relation to safe installation and control of the BESS.
  • Engineering specification development including scope or work documents and engineering drawings.
  • Reviewing and approving design documentation provided by contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Commissioning the BESS, ensuring complete functionality, and reviewing all required standards to ensure they are understood, achieved, and recorded.
  • Research new products (BESS, EV & PV technology) to assess their suitability for grid service and customer requirements.
  • Develop and refine processes such as site audit, design standards, feasibility study, commissioning, and product testing.

What will I be doing?

Travel to site and find a suitable location to install a BESS. While on site complete the following:

  • Liaise with the client to understand the problem and provide answers to technical questions as required.
  • Safety assessment of existing HV and LV switchgear.
  • Propose a cable route, and determine if an existing underground duct is available and suitable or is new containment required etc.
  • Develop a solution to monitor current and voltage at HV for grid protection requirements.
  • Record comprehensive notes and photos from the site visit.
  • If a model is required, capture the information (rating plates) of all equipment required.

Utility CIA application - prepare and interface with Utility during study period:

  • Utility Connection Agreement.
  • Revenue Metering Plan.
  • SCADA Interface with Utility and Host.
  • Consultations and/or reviews with appropriate bodies during permitting.

Provide a design package for pricing. This package will typically require the following:

  • Submit connection agreement or provide support to 3rd party specialists depending on complexity of the system.
  • BESS functionality requirements, voltage regulation, frequency regulation, backup power, grid following or UPS.
  • Control and metering equipment specification such as VTs & CTs.
  • Switchgear specification, both LV and HV.
  • Specification for utility protection, transformer, earthing and cabling details.
  • Design a solution for communication over long distances where necessary.
  • Civil works, such as concrete slabs, stairs, fencing etc.
  • Monitoring specification.
  • Creating and modification of drawings in AutoCad.
  • The design must be compliant with all relevant standards and directives.
  • Script for FAT testing and commissioning requirements.
  • List out documents required for approval prior to construction such as equipment layout drawings or SLDs.

Reviewing technical documentation from contactors, suppliers, and utilities.

  • Ensure lessons learned from previous projects are implemented.
  • The submission meets the scope of work requirements.
  • Assess for potential cost saving solutions.
  • Ensure all documentation required, has been provided.
  • Understand the project milestones and plan for long lead items.
  • Provide feasibility report to the management team.

Provide support during the construction phase.

  • Answer any questions about the design to the installers.
  • Review and approve alternative solutions if there are unforeseen issues is on site. This might be in real-time.
  • Attend site to inspect the installation and raise any issues proactively.
  • Provide updates to the management team.
  • Maintain the lessons learned register.
  • Keep photo log of the progress.

Commission the BESS (and potentially EV chargers or PV)

  • Run through the commissioning checklist.
  • Test the battery functionality against the commissioning script.
  • Record all results and from both the BESS control screen, power analyser and remote monitoring.
  • Confirm and record the protection settings for circuit breakers related to the BESS.
  • Witness the utility protection testing with the DNO representatives. Control the battery as requested to complete each test.
  • Update the design drawings to as-built.
  • Ensure an operation and maintenance manual is created and provided to site.
  • Update the lessons learned register once the project is completed.
  • Pro-actively develop solid working relationships with key customers and 3rd party contactors.
  • Keep abreast of the development of related technology across the following products: BESS, EV chargers and PV.
  • Use each project as an opportunity to refine and improve each design and execution.
  • Contribute towards a standards library. This will eventually cover templates, title sheets, drawings, legends of symbols and equipment specifications.

Core Competencies

  • Experience in connecting renewables and/or BESS to the grid.
  • The ability to produce a scope of work package (documents, drawings, specification).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience within the electrical and/or renewable fields.
  • In-depth understanding of how BESS/UPS operate and are installed.
  • Excellent understanding of electrical (LV & HV) and civil engineering.
  • Excellent understanding of local acts, regulations, permits, standards, and directives associated with BESS.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be highly-motivated and have the ability to work on your own initiative without immediate hands on support in diverse locations.
  • Experience of working safely on site, inside high energy switch rooms.
  • Understanding of utility grid and practices, including interconnection, transmission planning, and energy markets
  • Willingness to travel to audit sites and oversee installation works.

What do I need to be a good technical fit for this role?

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in electrical engineering.
  • Full and valid driving licence.
  • Proficient user of MS office.
  • Proficient user of AutoCad.
  • Proficient user of power simulation software (PSCAD etc.)
