**Job Summary**
The Photography Director works with all stock photography vendors worldwide on usage terms, pricing, and right clearances. Thisposition communicates with museum directors & curators to gain access to photograph their unique collections of artifacts. They work cross-functionally with photography-related resources including legal staff, color management specialists, Photoshop specialists, digital asset management experts, editors, and the creative director to ensure all photography is up to the high standards of Sterling publishing, all rights are secured, and all assets properly archived.
**What You Do**
Oversees one staff photo editor, and 1-3 freelance photo editors working on heavily illustrated books and book covers, as well as one part-time staff photographer
Works closely with Creative Director, text editors, and art directors to understand the image needs on all photographically-driven covers and interiors
Assigns & oversees photo research and editing of 25-50 book projects annually
Personally conducts photo research and edits a number of titles and covers
Negotiates, hires, and directs freelance food, beverage, and product photographers and stylists for numerous cookbooks and crafting books; directs and approves the work of the staff photographer on a variety of food, beverage, product, and craft assignments
Selects, approves, and directs freelance photographers working with authors remotely.
Reviews all copyright and permissions challenges for covers and interiors
Reviews and approves all image usage in packaged titles for quality and accuracy
Reviews and approves all budgets for photo-driven titles or covers; oversees full budget for Photo Department, for licensed images as well as commissioned work.
Establishes benchmark schedules for all books with Photo shoots or Photo Research and implements these in Title Management system
Establish key inputs to Photo department workflows and processes to ensure delivery and communicate these to all other Creative Departments
Determine status of image rights and oversee the securing of publication rights for all photographs contained within dozens of illustrated book projects annually. Oversee the compilation of complete rights and licensing information into Excel based art-logs; track usage terms stated in final invoices to ensure compliance with agreed upon caps, etc.
**Knowledge & Experience**
4-year college degree or equivalent work experience.
10+ years in a photo research or photo editing position
Connections to freelance photo editors and photographers
Demonstrable management experience
Demonstrated experience negotiating contracts and managing budgets
Photoshop experience, intermediate, including basic color management
Critical eye for excellent photography in a wide range of styles, from studio to field work
Negotiating skills
Knowledge of stock & assignment photography sources and business practices worldwide
Experience editing from stock agencies, museums and other cultural institutions, and individual photographers; well-versed in sources for public domain images.
Thorough knowledge of copyright law and usage restrictions contained in contracts
High level of skill managing staff & freelance photo editors
Thorough knowledge of digital photography, photographic lighting on location, digital imaging
Thorough knowledge of prepress and 4-color printing technology and color correction
