NYC Health + Hospitals | Gotham Health Cumberland Diagnostic and Treatment Center has been healing the residents of Fort Greene and the surrounding Brooklyn Community for more than a century. True to its roots as a community hospital, Cumberland prides itself on responding to local health concerns through many forms of community involvement. Job Description

  • Organizes appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Greets patients in a friendly, tactful manner and explain the purpose of the specimen
  • Identifies patient by using at least two identifiers: Name and Date of Birth
  • Identifies proper specimen to be drawn via providers orders through Epic
  • Assembles all required equipment near drawing area.
  • Guides patient into safe position.
  • Checks arm for suitable veins: use other arm, if necessary.
  • Applies tourniquet; do not leave on for an excessive amount of time.
  • Selects vein, palpate and traces path with index finger.
  • Cleanses venipuncture site with alcohol.
  • Anchors vein and smoothly inserts needle with bevel up.
  • Smoothly pushes evacuated tube into holder without hanging the needle position.
  • Calmly changes position of needle if blood does not flow.
  • Releases tourniquet when blood starts to flow.
  • Fills tubes in correct order.
  • Removes last tube from holder before withdrawing needle.
  • Withdraws needle from arm smoothly.
  • Applies pressure to site after withdrawing needle.
  • Disposes of needle properly and carefully.
  • Mops all tubes gently five times.
  • Checks site to ascertain bleeding has stopped.
  • Process and label tubes from wristband (inpatient) or providers request via Epic (outpatient):
    • Patient s last name and first name.
    • Patient s identification number
    • Time
    • Date
    • Phlebotomist s initials
    • Other information required by the institution
  • Clean up all supplies and waste and discard in appropriate containers
  • Attends trainer activities provided by the institution and participates as a trained trainer in laboratory competency activities.
  • Understand and practice the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals specifically to avoid Misidentification of patients.
  • Understand and obey HIPAA laws specifically to protect the confidentiality of patient information.

    • Minimum Qualifications

    1. Valid certification as a clinical laboratory technician issued by the NYSED.

    Special Note:

    1. Successful completion of an appropriate training program for phlebotomy (satisfactory to the laboratory director) must be completed prior to an individual performing such work.

    Department Preferences

    College Associate degree preferred:

    Certification in Phlebotomy

    Experience in laboratory environment and or clinical instructor in phlebotomy preferred.
