Position Overview:

HCA seeks compassionate, skilled professionals to join our team in the Behavior Specialist II role. The ideal candidate will value developing meaningful, long-term relationships with the individuals and families we serve. They will strive to be an active, creative collaborator as part of a multidisciplinary team working to improve quality of life and community integration.

Under the direction of the Behavioral Specialist, assist with conducting life skill groups and clinical evaluation of Individuals; provide direct support to staff to assist individuals in achieving more effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment.

There is a sign-on bonus of up to $3,000 for this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with facilitation of discussion with individuals, and/or families to help them understand problems.
  • Observe individuals, listen to their concerns, record their observations and report to Behavioral Specialist about any unusual behavior
  • Model appropriate implementation of behavior treatment plans
  • Assist with the collection of information about individuals, using interviews, case histories, observational techniques, and other assessment methods.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to discuss therapies, treatments, counseling resources, or techniques.
  • Provide direct care duties, including activities of daily living, as assigned. Redirect and/or stabilize behaviors of clients.
  • Assist with documentation of progress of goals, activities, response to treatment, and progress, in a clear, concise, and timely manner
  • Assist the Behavior Specialist (Level 1) with developing and writing behavior monitoring plans and behavior history s for the individuals served.
  • Record monthly target behaviors and provide needed reports.
  • Participation, facilitation, and documentation of the treatment-review team process, in conjunction with the Behavioral Specialist and clinical team at weekly meetings.
  • Perform weekly visits to each IRA at times conducive to direct observation of individuals served and attend IRA staff meetings.
  • Attend individual ISP meetings and psych appointments.
  • Member of internal audit team as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Meets standards of 633.16 Regulations - Section 633.16 (32) (Level 2)

Level 2 BIS: Must meet the qualifications as outlined in (a), (b) or (c):

  • Must: have National Board Certification in Behavior Analysis (BCBA); and
  • have a Master s degree in behavior analysis, or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology which is approved by OPWDD review; or
  • Must: Have either: a Master s degree in clinical or treatment field in psychology, social work, school psychology, or a related human services field; or
  • a New York State license in Mental Health Counseling; and have or obtain OPWDD-approved specialized training or experience in assessment techniques and behavioral support plan development; and
  • have provided behavioral services for an agency in the OPWDD system continuously since December 31, 2012; or
  • Must: have a Master s degree in clinical or treatment field in psychology or social work and hold the Civil Service title of School Psychologist I or Psychologist II of New York State.

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Excellent verbal, written and active listening skills.
  • Excellent organizational & time management skills.
  • Knowledge of all appropriate ethical, professional, and legal standards.
  • Maintain all OPWDD required trainings
  • Understands and respects the unique needs of individuals served and their families.
  • Knowledge of the NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and prefer experience with individual dually diagnosed (developmental disabilities and mental health disorders)
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and special education.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Strong collaboration skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, including a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrates energy and enthusiasm for working with OPWDD population.
  • Demonstrate appropriate/professional interpersonal skills with agency personnel, individuals and their families.
  • Valid NYS Driver s license.
  • Proficient with Internet Explorer; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Outlook; Microsoft Word; and Windows Operating System.
