Job Description:

The Athletic game day operator will fulfill essential responsibilities related to Hobart and William Smith athletic home competitions. Typical responsibilities include public address announcer, scorekeeper, scoreboard/game clock/shot clock operator, lines people and game manager.Hobart and William Smith Athletics currently offers 23 sports with growth to 35 intercollegiate sports. HWS athletics is a multi-divisional member of the NCAA and hosts over 100 home events per year. Hobart and William Smith Athletics also host numerous post season and NCAA competitions. It is imperative that all home athletic events are marked by execution of sport-specific rules, accuracy, efficiency, safety, hospitality and sportsmanship.This is a part time, hourly, non-benefits-eligible, administrative position. The position is seasonal based on the sport. Work hours are variable and based on home athletic event contest times. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Flexibility to work nights and weekends. The position may require the ability to work in an outdoor environment in adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.Sports included but not limited to baseball, men s and women s basketball, field hockey, football, men s and women s ice hockey, men s and women s lacrosse, men s and women s soccer, men s and women s swimming and diving, men s and women s volleyball.RESPONSIBILITIES:Public address announcer is responsible for:Reading pre-game announcements at designated home athletic eventsIntroducing the National AnthemReading player introductionsReading in-game announcements of game events and scripted announcements during stoppages of playReading half-time announcements including game statistics and promotional eventsAs directed by the supervisor, providing announcements to the crowd during the game to ensure a safe, appropriate atmosphere for home athletic eventsPlaying prepared music via electronic device during pre-game, in-game, half-time and post-gameScorekeeper is responsible for:Keeping an accurate scorebookTracking individual player and team statistics for home athletic contestsWorking with game officials to ensure a fair contest as it relates to the scorebook and player participationMaintaining the official team rosters of eligible players and substitutesReviewing suspension lists and verify the eligibility of each player prior to the beginning of the gameEnsuring the visible scoreboard reflects the accurate scoreScoreboard/game clock/shot clock operator is responsible for:Inputting team names and pre-contest warmup time on the clockInputting the game score throughout the contest on the applicable scoreboardKeeping time by starting and stopping the clock according to the rules of the gameMaintaining the accurate time, score, quarter/half/period, and game statistics on the scoreboardLines people are responsible for:Being an extension of the officialsControlling an end line and sideline as it relates to the rules of the gameGame manager is responsible for:The execution of game day operationsEvent staff operationsInspection of athletic facilities prior to the home contest to ensure conditions for athletes, coaches, officials and spectators are safe, clean and playableInforming supervisor of facility issuesManaging of half-time activities and promotionsGreeting visiting team upon arrival to HWS, showing them to their locker room, athletic training room and contest siteCoordinating parking and security operationsConfirming visiting locker room schedule for contest with supervisorGreeting officials and ensuring completion of any required payment formsAssisting with planning special events or ceremonies at contestsProblem solving of on-site issuesA high school diploma is required. A minimum of one year of previous experience as a game day operator is required. Must have proficient-to-advanced knowledge of the respective sport. Excellent verbal and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure and within the rules of the sport. Public address announcer requires expressive but clear and controlled vocal skills.Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
