Job Description: The Assistant Provost for Academic Programs and Faculty Engagement works on behalf of the Provost and in collaboration with campus leadership and faculty governance to support the State University mission. They support academic program development throughout the University by advising and assisting campuses on relevant practices, standards, policies, and regulations. They contribute to systemwide academic policy development and implementation. They lead selected systemwide programs that support faculty development and engagement, including through the Distinguished Faculty and Chancellor's Excellence Awards programs, topical fellows' programs, and other special projects. They participate in systemwide committees, serve as System Administration liaison to selected SUNY campus role-alike groupsDuties and Responsibilities:
  • Review academic program proposals from assigned SUNY campuses, which includes interpreting and advising on practices, standards, policies, and regulations, as well as guidelines and protocols regarding program development and registration.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of academic aspects of SUNY, including but not limited to, academic programs, general education, prior learning assessment, transfer, enrollment management, and the contextual factors in which SUNY colleges and universities operate.
  • Advise assigned SUNY campuses on strategies for review of their academic program portfolio.
  • As assigned, assess systemwide policies and work as part of a team to support policy development and implementation.
  • Lead the process to review nominations for the SUNY Distinguished Faculty ranks.
  • Serve as liaison to the SUNY Distinguished Academy Board.
  • Lead the process to review nominations for the SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in the areas of Faculty Service, Librarianship, Professional Service, Scholarship and Creative Activities, and Teaching.
  • Serve as System Administration representative on the awards committees of the SUNY faculty governance bodies, which includes working with the committee members to review and propose revisions of the policies and procedures for the Distinguished Faculty ranks and the Chancellor's Awards for Excellence.
  • Lead the process to review nominations for the SUNY Chancellor's Distinguished Dissertation Award.
  • Serve as lead point of contact for and liaison to selected topical SUNY fellows' programs, such as the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (DEISJ) Fellows and Civic Education and Engagement and Civil Discourse Fellows.
  • Work with the SUNY faculty governance bodies to reinstate and lead the Conversations in the Disciplines (CID) program.
  • Work with Chief Academic Officers and Directors of Centers of Teaching and Learning (or the like) across SUNY campuses to support and amplify efforts related to faculty development and engagement in the areas of responsibility for this position.
  • Identify and promote opportunities for inter-campus and intra-SUNY collaboration, as well as between SUNY and external partners.
  • As directed, prepare briefings, reports, and/or resolutions on issues pertaining to academic programs for the Chancellor and Board of Trustees, the State University community, Legislature, and other stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with campus leadership, assist in resolving confidential problems, questions, and/or complaints from students, faculty, legislators, and other constituencies as related to assigned campuses.
  • Serve as SUNY liaison on Middle States Accreditation visits, as assigned.
  • Establish sustained, efficient, and effective dialogue with the senior leadership within System Administration, across SUNY campuses, and with external partners.
  • Support shared governance throughout the System.
  • Specific duties and responsibilities subject to change based on operational needs, with other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree
  • Current or prior appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher
  • At least ten years of progressive higher education experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, and/or faculty development and engagement, which includes experience with academic program development, implementation, and assessment
  • Experience working with diverse populations in higher education
  • Experience developing academic program partnerships across higher education institutions and/or with community/industry partners
  • Interpersonal skills that result in the advancement of SUNY goals through effective working relationships with diverse constituencies both within SUNY and with external constituencies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Flexibility and commitment to improvement
  • Ability to work both independently and with guidance, navigate competing priorities, and address lastminute requests for information
Preferred Qualification:
  • Familiarity with the role of a System Administration in a multi-campus system
Additional Information:
  • Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $105,000-$115,000.

  • This position will be based in Albany.
