Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under the direction of the Head Nurse/Assistant Director/Associate Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the quality of care rendered to high-risk, acutely ill pediatric patients. As the AHN, s/he has the authority and responsibility of managing the unit to ensure quality care for every patient in the unit and is held accountable by the use of the nursing process. S/he is responsible for the implementation of the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives of Nursing Care through the use of the Departmental and Nursing Policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

- Checks time and attendance for employees (tardiness, unscheduled absences) and reports concerns to Head Nurse.

- Coordinates all patient care activities in the unit.

- Conduct meetings with staff to communicate the implementation of policies, care innovations, new/revised/discontinuance of practices, policies, equipment, supplies, etc.

- Makes or refers all request for unit needs to other allied health services.

- Observes symptoms or changes in patient's care status and responds appropriately.

- Review and assist with the balancing of the staff schedule.

- Conducts, participates in the disciplinary process.

- Request and receives reports from staff. The conditions of patients and significant occurrences observed.

- Keeps anecdotal records of significant occurrences on the unit and behavior and performance of staff.

- Effectively uses the electronic as well as the paper medical record.

- Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.

Minimum Qualifications

For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1, 2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:

1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.

2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA),

3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.

For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020, based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the Laws of 2018: 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and a. A Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or b. Obtains a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in a above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure.

2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
